Why young people?
Working alongside young people is central to the mission of The Salvation Army. While young people face unique challenges that impact them from reaching their personal and collective potential, we also believe that investing in young people, and raising their aspirations and achievements is vital to them as people and for the good of society as a whole.
Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development of peace. If, however, they are left on society’s margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies. (Kofi Annan)
The voice of young people is often marginalised in society. The Salvation Army seeks to speak up on their behalf and give them a voice both in what we do, and in wider society. In all we do, we place value on their lives and their stories and seek to intentionally build up their self-worth to enable them to thrive and flourish. The Salvation Army believes that young people have unbridled potential: to dream, to lead and to restore forgotten places and rebuild communities. We’re committed to bringing up young leaders, not only for the future, but for the here and now.
To raise leaders and young people who are disciples of Jesus in the tradition of social change and justice through three integrated priorities:
- Mission: Engaging with young people and the issues that affect them in their community.
- Discipleship: Equipping and inspiring young people to become passionate followers of Jesus Christ.
- Leadership: Equipping and empowering youth and children’s leaders of all ages to enhance their communities and our world.
Through embedding these three priorities throughout all Salvation Army youth and children’s work we seek to help young people reach their potential and discover a sense of identity, purpose and belonging by inspiring them to live out a vision of justice and social action. We do this by following the way Jesus lived his life and we want everyone to join in.
