International Development - World Environment Day

published on 5 Jun 2015

This World Environment Day (Friday 5 June), we are reminded of our responsibility to care for the environment and take action on climate change.

On Wednesday 17 June thousands of people from all across the UK will come together in London for The Climate Coalition’s ‘Speak Up’ lobby. This will be a day to celebrate and speak up for all the things we love that could be lost to climate change.

This year is a crucial one in the battle against climate change. In December, the world’s governments will meet in Paris and will endeavour to reach an international agreement on capping global carbon emissions which could be critical for ensuring that global temperature rises are kept below safe limits.

"Although individual decisions may seem small in the face of global threats and trends, when billions of people join forces in common purpose, we can make a tremendous difference."

- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

Our political leaders have a responsibility to take action and so do we, because when we work together we can make a big impact.

In this first mass lobby of the new government we will have the opportunity to meet with our newly elected MPs in person and ask them to commit to taking strong action on climate change.

There will be plenty of entertainment to enjoy as you wait to meet your MP with street performers, musicians and artists as well as an interactive art installation, interfaith space in Archbishop’s Park and an inspirational rally finale.

The day will commence at 12pm with parallel ecumenical church services taking place at St Margaret’s Church and Emmanuel Centre where Territorial Commander, Commissioner Clive Adams will be leading prayers.

Over 3,500 people have already said they'll be there. That’s a brilliant start, but we’d love to see even more people come together, to show politicians how important climate change is to communities across the UK.
