Welfare Reform

The original intention of the welfare state was to provide a safety net, supporting people back on their feet when they faced times of hardship.

Our concern is that in recent years, reforms intended to save money and reduce welfare dependency have pushed increasing numbers of people towards crisis point.

While The Salvation Army is not opposed to welfare reform, our experience is that overstretched charities are being left to provide support that previously has been the responsibility of the state.
