Up until this point, The Salvation Army has had two websites:

• salvationarmy.org.uk is aimed at external audiences, including donors, fundraisers, media, politicians and people needing our help.
• OurHub is our intranet, a private, password-protected website. It’s for operational audiences, including officers and employees.

We need to strengthen membership communications, so salvationist.org.uk is aimed at Salvationists and people who belong to local expressions of The Salvation Army.

All three website teams will work together to make sure content is easy to find for all our different audiences, that there isn’t unnecessary duplication and that messages are consistent.

It is hoped the new website will become the go-to digital space for Salvationists and people who belong to The Salvation Army. It will hold content that helps people engage with our mission priorities, which are to:

• Share the good news
• Nurture disciples of Jesus
• Serve others without discrimination
• Seek justice and reconciliation
• Care for creation

As part of this project, the Resource Centre has moved from salvationarmy.org.uk to salvationist.org.uk. Be assured that no content has been lost, and old website URLs have been automatically redirected to the new website.

Alongside the Resource Centre, the website will be home to internal Army news, stories, devotional materials, events and learning opportunities, plus key information about how people can get involved in mission.

While the website will be primarily focused on meeting the needs of Salvationists across the territory, we hope it will also be a welcoming open-door for people seeking faith and belonging.

As part of this project, content that is aimed at Salvationists has moved from salvationarmy.org.uk to salvationist.org.uk, this includes the resource centre and event pages.

The weekly Salvationist magazine will continue.

The publication remains an important resource for the territory and will work alongside the new website.

An Online Content Editor has been developing the website since April 2021 and works within the Communications Service at Territorial Headquarters (THQ).

Apart from line-management through the Assistant Secretary for Communications (internal), this editor also answers to a steering group and reports to the Territorial Communications Board.

Steering Group

Representatives of departments from THQ that create content for Salvationists and have relevant expertise have come together to form a steering group. Steering group members are working together to break down siloed working and organise content in a way that makes it easier for Salvationists to find and discover.

The group includes representatives from:

• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
• Music and Creative Arts
• PR & Communications
• Publishing
• Resources Hub
• School for In-Service Training and Development (SISTAD)
• Spiritual Life Development
• Territorial Events Unit
• Video Production Unit

User feedback

To start with, our aim is to bring together content that already exists for Salvationists and make it easier for people to find and discover opportunities to get involved in mission.

Once the website is up and running, we want to be in dialogue with current and potential members of The Salvation Army to shape its future.
 
This means that when you visit the website, we want you to be ready to share your feedback, to tell us what you want to see more of, to let us know how your experience could be improved and how we could make the website more engaging, accessible, and inclusive. In addition to providing opportunities for any user to give feedback, we have also formed a user feedback group.

Throughout December 2021 and January 2022, we invited people to apply to be part of a group that would meet once a quarter to share ideas for content and user experience.

Membership of the group will change each year and we are really pleased that the first year will bring together a diverse group of people. It includes people of different ages, people from different countries and local contexts, people with different ethnicities, with lived experience of disability and different connections to The Salvation Army such as officers, soldiers, adherents, attenders and volunteers.

Each corps and division already has a page on salvationarmy.org.uk, and it is important these pages stay there so that members of the public can easily find them.

The new website will direct people to the ‘find a church’ function and the divisional pages on salvationarmy.org.uk, rather than duplicate content.
