The Salvation Army’s Emergency Services in the North West are on duty following an explosion which has devastated several houses in the Shaw area of Oldham.
Led by North West Co-ordinator Major Nigel Tansley who is serving as chaplain to blue-light emergency personnel on the scene, the team was mobilised at around 1pm today (26 June 2012).
The Salvation Army were alerted by the Fire Service in Manchester to provide welfare support to victims, which includes people evacuated from their homes.
The scene of the explosion in Buckley Street is close to the Shaw Salvation Army church, which is on standby to be used an emergency shelter.
“We have nine team members helping out, offering welfare support, a listening ear and a cup of tea to local people, fire crews and police officers,” says Major Nigel.
The Salvation Army team is expected to be offering support until 10pm today.
