The Salvation Army’s Cardiff foodbank has received its 100th food drop off thanks to generous customers and staff of CO-OP stores across the city.

The partnership was set up last May in response to the outbreak of Covid and has helped thousands of families hit hardest by the pandemic.

Salvation Army divisional commander Major George Baker said: “We are grateful to staff and customers of the CO-OP for their continued generosity.

“The Salvation Army is at the heart of the community in Cardiff supporting people in need, offering practical assistance and friendship.

"The donations from the CO-OP have provided much-needed essentials to households affected by the pandemic.

"The donations have also meant we’ve been able to include some fresh food and the odd treat such as cakes or pastries, chocolates and biscuits in a food parcel.”

Graham Craven, member pioneer coordinator for the CO-OP, said: “We began delivering to The Salvation Army at the end of May 2020, fairly soon after the first lockdown was announced. Our aim throughout the pandemic has been to help those who most needed it. That’s why we looked to support The Salvation Army.

“At the height of the pandemic we had 22 volunteers making deliveries and as people have slowly been returning to work this has reduced to nine local volunteers continuing to do drop offs.

“It has been a pleasure to contribute to The Salvation Army’s efforts and people can still donate when they are in our stores.”
