Salvation Army’s Emergency Response Team play key role in 999 Emergency Reconstruction day

The Salvation Army’s Northern Emergency Response Unit played a prominent role at the Emergency Services 999 event at the Trafford Centre.

The fifth annual Emergency Services Open Day took place on Thursday, August 6, 2015 between 10am and 4pm. The event was on the car parks close to the entrance to the Food Hall.

Last year the '999 Day' saw more than 165 displays made up of emergency vehicles, vintage appliances, demonstrations and displays. The event was attended by over 10,000 people.

Major Nigel Tansley MBE, manages the Northern Emergency Response Teams. He recently spent 3 weeks at the site of the Bosley Wood Flour fire near Macclesfield, keeping the fire and emergency services fed properly to make sure they are able to do their jobs.

Since 2002 Major Tansley has led a team of 120 volunteers who respond to fires and other emergencies to provide welfare for firefighters, police officers and paramedics.

Major Tansley also lends his ears to staff across Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) having served as the Service’s lead Chaplain for 12 years.

During his time as GMFRS Chaplain, Major Tansley has helped hundreds of firefighters bear witness to terrible suffering.

Major Tansley said: “The Salvation Army Emergency Response role is to support those doing a tough job and who deal with tragedy and suffering on a daily basis. We make sure emergency teams are fed properly and also offer pastoral care if appropriate.”

During the 999 event, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were joined by Greater Manchester Police (GMP), North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and a range of other emergency response, community safety and support services.
