Meet Mick: Looking forward to a family Christmas

published on 16 Nov 2020

“I’m looking forward to Christmas this year thanks to The Salvation Army because I will be able to spend it with my family.”

Mick Wright became homeless in March 2018 following the breakdown of a long-term relationship. With nowhere to stay and missing daily contact with his son, he ended up losing his job as well.

Mick’s life hit rock-bottom when he suffered a series of health problems that left him in hospital.

Mick was helped by The Salvation Army's Housing First programme to help him find his own flat.

Shortly after becoming homeless, Mick was given support at one of the Salvation Army’s supported accommodation centres in Glasgow. It was there he was offered a permanent home through the Housing First project - which offers a house and the support needed to stay.

Mick credits the project, especially his Salvation Army support worker Sharon, for helping turn his life around.

Through The Salvation Army I was offered a place on the Housing First project. It's been life-changing. Sharon, my support worker, is a lifeline – from making sure I've paid my bills to reminding me about attending appointments.

In September 2018, he was offered a one-bedroom Housing First flat and since then hasn’t looked back. Five months after moving into his new home, he met his new partner Deborah and they went on to have a baby boy in December 2019.

Mick said: "I had been working full time as a chef but when my marriage collapsed, I lost my job and eventually my home.

"Through the Salvation Army I was offered a place on the Housing First project. It's been life-changing. Sharon, my support worker, is a lifeline – from making sure I've paid my bills to reminding me about attending appointments.

"Having my own home means I can have a proper relationship with my children again. That’s especially important around Christmas time. We are just about to move into our very first house together and are excited about getting our first Christmas tree and making things special for the children.

“I’m looking forward to Christmas this year thanks to The Salvation Army because I will be able to spend it with my family.”
