BRISTOL residents can now support community projects in the city by shopping at and donating clothes and household items to a new centre in Filton.

The Salvation Army donation centre on 31-39 Gloucester Road North sells items including furniture, household items, clothing, books and toys.
The centre – which opened for business on Thursday 11 July, is also looking for volunteers to become part of its team.

Louise Elcox is the centre’s manager and she said:

“Our motto here is ‘Shop; volunteer; donate’ and if you’re de-cluttering, downsizing or are after a bargain and want to show your support for a good cause in our community, we want to hear from you. By shopping here and donating your pre-loved but unwanted items to us you can prolong the life of items that may end up in a landfill site, while you help us to transform the lives of people in Bristol and further afield.

“Paul, our friendly driver will collect and deliver any large items you want to donate to us or have bought in-store and are unable to carry home. And please don’t forget we’re here to provide a friendly and listening ear, friendship and advice for everyone. We are also looking for volunteers to help with tasks such as collecting used furniture, sorting out donated clothing and collectibles and serving customers.”

In Bristol, The Salvation Army runs the Logos House Lifehouse on Wade Street which helps people who have been homeless to rebuild their lives.
Through its five churches in the city, The Salvation Army provides services including the Employment Plus programme to help people into work.
And it runs programmes including family support, parent and toddler groups, community lunch clubs and youth drop-in sessions and breakfast friendship clubs.

Major Ian Harris, leader of The Salvation Army’s Severn and Somerset Division, who cut the ribbon and officially opened the centre said:
“This new centre will seek to serve the local and wider city communities through collection and sale of much-needed goods as well as supporting The Salvation Army’s work in Bristol, across Severn and Somerset and further afield.

“The Salvation Army is a Christian church and charity that provides services in the community – particularly to those who are vulnerable or marginalised, and has a long and proud history of serving the people of Bristol. We are there when you need us and offer practical help and advice to all those who need it and this new centre will support us with this important mission.”

The Salvation Army Trading Company - which is the trading arm of The Salvation Army, runs the donation centre on Gloucester Road North.
The centre is open between 9.00am and 5.00pm from Monday to Saturday.
There is also a donations hatch on the side of the building where people can deposit shoes and clothing which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
