Exclusive footage of our fight against modern slavery

Today viewers joined the second in The Salvation Army’s Frontline Live series to learn first-hand how The Salvation Army is fighting the global crime of modern slavery and human trafficking.
The event, which was live-streamed via The Salvation Army’s YouTube channel, gave the public a rare opportunity to engage directly with frontline workers and a survivor of modern slavery as they shared about The Salvation Army’s work to help people rebuild their lives after exploitation. It is now available to watch back on our YouTube channel.
Viewers met Dan*, a survivor of modern slavery, who received support in Salvation Army safe houses which helped him to move on from horrific experiences. For years Dan was beaten if he refused to hand over wages and sell drugs for criminals who also threatened and attacked his family.
Dan said: “Everything The Salvation Army did for me was amazing. They got me from being down the bottom and feeling terrified to getting me into a university. I’m now studying, I’ve also got a full-time job and I’m getting better. If it wasn’t for The Salvation Army, I would be in a completely different place in my life right now. They’ve saved my life, completely.”

Also present was Lieut-Colonel Dean Pallant, who chatted to Major Kathy Betteridge, Director for Anti Trafficking and Modern Slavery, and Jenny Gibson, Programme Coordinator of the London Outreach Service, as they took questions from interested viewers.
Lieut-Colonel Pallant said: “It has been hugely encouraging to see how interested and engaged people are to connect with The Salvation Army’s fight for human rights and social justice. I was privileged to listen as our caring and committed staff gave insights into the valuable work they do every day supporting people who have been used and abused by others. In the UK and around the world The Salvation Army is helping survivors of modern slavery to rebuild their lives when they are rescued from their captors, building on the work undertaken through the Government contract with additional support programmes provided through its own charitable funds.
The Salvation Army’s Survivor Support Fund provides survivors with grants to help them transition to living independently such as furniture for a new home or equipment for a new job. Last year the Fund supported more than 550 applications valued at £130,000 to meet needs where no other funding was available.
