Visits by Councillor Paul Andrews (Executive Member for Adult Health and Wellbeing) and Councillor Emma Taylor (Bradford Ward) to Discovery House, Manchester, provided staff and residents with an opportunity to demonstrate the support on offer to those most in need in Manchester through The Salvation Army.

Homelessness Services North West Regional Manager Robert Long said of the visit: "We have been able to demonstrate this week to our local councillors the fantastic support our staff teams are able to provide residents who have experienced homelessness, and how the vital funding with which we are provided is being used effectively in Manchester. We also had an opportunity to explain in greater detail to Councillor Andrews, who had a particular interest in the subject matter, about our harm reduction strategy."

Discovery House is a modern centre that offers supported housing for single people experiencing homelessness and promotes independent living. The staff team are on hand to support residents and to guide them to engage in meaningful activities through further education courses, employment training, lifeskills sessions and more.

The centre has ten single bedrooms with access to shared facilities - lounge, bathroom, kitchen. Translators are available to residents through Manchester City Council and the staff work closely with the local community alcohol and psychiatric nurses teams, as well as Manchester Drug Service and the Sexual Health Agency to provide additional advice and support services.

Councillor Taylor said: "Through my visit to the Lifehouse in Ancoats, I was able to witness firsthand the work The Salvation Army is doing to support our most vulnerable residents in Manchester. It was great to see The Salvation Army collaborating with partner organisations across the city to support those most in need."
