Churches Join Together For Freedom Sunday

published on 30 Jul 2014

The Salvation Army is delighted to join with churches and denominations across the world for Freedom Sunday - a specific day to pray, worship and act on the issue of human trafficking.

Salvation Army churches have held coordinated days of prayer for victims of trafficking for the past eight years but in 2014 combined churches and denominations across the globe will join it on Freedom Sunday, which falls on 19th October (18th for those for whom Saturday is the Sabbath).

During the day congregations will raise awareness of the human trafficking, show compassion for men, women and children trafficked and exploited and commit to take action in their local and global communities to prevent this crime.

The Freedom Sunday Resource pack contains flexible materials from different cultures and denominations such as prayers, sermon thoughts and stories and is available on The Salvation Army website.

The Salvation Army has a long history of working with people who are vulnerable and marginalised across the world, including people who are victims of trafficking. Since July 2011 The Salvation Army has been operating a Government contract in England and Wales to provide vital help and support to adult victims of this pitiless exploitation.

This offers unconditional support without discrimination wherever there is a need, working with partners and agencies with specialist knowledge and services to ensure that every woman and man who is identified as trafficked will receive the best and most appropriate support available.

Anne Read, Anti-Human Trafficking Response Coordinator for The Salvation Army said:

“Every day in our work with victims of human trafficking we witness how human trafficking devastates the lives of vulnerable people so we are pleased that in 2014 The Salvation Army will be praying alongside other churches and denominations worldwide and pledging our continued commitment to act to eradicate this horrific crime against humanity. We welcome the launch today of the Freedom Sunday Resource pack as a wonderful tool for our corps and centres to raise this issue in the communities we serve.”
