Max desperately needed to get away

Max's story

At just eight years old, Max lived in constant fear of his angry, volatile father, who would fly off the handle at the slightest thing. The little boy was so terrified that he would hide, anxious and lonely in his small bedroom, waiting for his father to find someone else to take out his anger on.

Help came when one of his friends invited him to their local Salvation Army centre and we were able to offer him a place at one of our summer camps, giving him a break from the anxiety he had felt for so long.

It’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference

For the first time in as long as he could remember, Max was free to run about and play games with other children. He didn’t need to be afraid of making noise and instead did all the things he’d missed out on, even learning to swim! We spent time with him building his confidence and resilience.

Life wasn’t easy after returning home and we still see Max regularly. He isn’t as scared as he was before and has even persuaded his dad to come along to activities at the local Salvation Army. He loves sharing stories and takes every chance to tell people about the moment he swam all by himself.

Help transform a child’s life with love and fun this summer

It’s the simplicity of our summer camps that makes them so special. We don’t do anything complicated or fancy, we just share stories, play games, sing songs and let the children run around. Most importantly, we just let children be children – often for the first time in their short lives. We take the time to get to know each child for who they are and let them try new things and grow in confidence. So this summer, help us change more young lives by sending a gift today.

A gift of:

£20 could cover the cost of running a weekly parent-and-toddler group at one of our centres.

£45 could give a child a bed for a night at one of our summer camps.

£100 could help to keep our community centres open so that children and their families can continue to receive the help and support they need to thrive.
