London Marathon stories: Rachel

My name is Rachel and I am from Ayr in Scotland. I grew up in The Salvation Army participating in “all things Army”. I sang in the singing company, played in the YP band, headed off to summer music schools and took part in open airs in the unpredictable Scottish weather.

This happy life however does not entitle me to ignore the world around me."

The reality of running in a world-famous sporting event has had an impact on my life over the past year in more ways than just physically.

I grew up in The Salvation Army singing, playing in the band, going to summer music schools and taking part in open air services in the unpredictable Scottish weather.

I am very grateful that I have a loving family, friends, and a roof over my head. This happy life however does not entitle me to ignore the world around me. When William Booth heard that men were sleeping out in the cold under the bridges of London he told his son to ‘Go and do something.’

My life within The Salvation Army has changed after moving away from home but by participating in the London Marathon 2017 I have found my “something” and continue to play my part in their story by fundraising for Gloucester House.

I would encourage anyone to “Go and do something” for yourself, your community and for those further afield. My reason to run was not only a personal decision to do something for myself but to do something for the people who will come into contact with Gloucester House.

Gloucester House is a fantastic facility offering residential rehabilitation for people who are doing something about their substance, drug and alcohol misuse and I am proud to be part of Team Sally Army 2017 fundraising for this worthwhile cause.
