Helping-Hand 2022

Gender Justice

The Helping-Hand Appeal is an annual collaboration between the Family Ministries Unit and International Development UK.

The focus of the 2022 Helping-Hand Appeal is Gender Justice - working with women around the world to ensure they have equal access to rights and opportunities, and the freedom to flourish.

Where do you go when home is not safe?

Who do you turn to for sanctuary when the person who should love you most is the threat?

Domestic abuse is a universal issue, not bound by social status, wealth or gender. However, most victims are female, with one in three women around the world experiencing intimate partner abuse or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Globally, The Salvation Army is journeying alongside women; supporting them to know their rights and encouraging them to take their place as equal and active members of society.

In Argentina, women who have experienced or are currently experiencing abuse at home have found safety, solace and support at The Salvation Army. Through group therapy sessions they are welcomed, cared for and listened to in a supportive and non-judgemental setting.

In its very nature, domestic abuse exists within a family setting. What should provide a foundation of love and protection is distorted and damaged. Family should be a place of joy, comfort, acceptance and safety.

Alongside the group therapy sessions for women, The Salvation Army in Argentina also runs ‘Learning Through Play’ sessions for children who are exposed to violence at home. Through fun and engaging activities, boys and girls are encouraged to find non-violent responses to different situations and take part in breaking the cycle of abuse in their families.

The focus of this year’s Helping-Hand Appeal is Gender Justice. We believe that women, both at home and in society, should not only be able to exist safely but have the freedom to flourish.

The Salvation Army is taking a stand for women and girls, to see gender justice a reality across the globe.
