New resources to help the most vulnerable local people and wider community have opened in Grantham thanks to The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army Trading Company’s new shop on St Peter’s Hill officially opened on Thursday 12th March and the organisation’s existing church in the town is getting ready to move into a new home. Working together will provide new ways to further meet the needs of local people, and marks a new chapter for the Church and charity which has been making a real difference to the lives of Grantham residents for the past 134 years.
Major Marta Ager, Commanding Officer at Grantham Corps (church), said: “We’re very excited as we believe the new Salvation Army Trading Company shop and our move to The Old Barrack in Sandon Road offer a great opportunity for us to further help local people and provide a hub for the community.
“The funds generated by the shop will support The Salvation Army’s work helping those most in need. In addition, it will strengthen our ability to connect with the community, sign post people to services which will make a difference to their lives and further increase our presence in the town. We are here for the people of Grantham and the new building will help us better meet their needs with an improved programme.”
Area Manager for Salvation Army Trading Company, Christine Westwood, commented: “We are so pleased to have opened a new charity shop in Grantham and we were delighted to see so many members of the local community flock in on opening day to support the valuable work of The Salvation Army.
“We are looking for volunteers to help out at the shop so would like to encourage anybody who is interested to get in touch. We really rely on the generosity of our volunteers, so if you think you can spare any time at all, from a few hours to a few days a week, please pop into the shop and talk to one of our friendly members of staff.
“We are also always grateful to accept donations from the public, whether it’s clothes, shoes, accessories or homewares. We only ask that items are clean and in good condition.”
The church currently meets for worship at 10:30am every Sunday at the Cree Centre on Aire Road and on Tuesdays at 2:30pm at the Baptist Church on Warf Road. Services will start taking place at The Old Barrack this spring.
This year The Salvation Army, an international Christian Church and charity, is celebrating 150 years of transforming lives and it is still at the heart of every community today, supporting those in need.
Profit raised from donations to the new shop will help fund The Salvation Army’s valuable work with people who are vulnerable and in need across the UK, including homelessness and addiction services, care for older people, help at emergency incidents, support for adult victims of human trafficking and a Family Tracing Service. Over the last five years alone Salvation Army Trading Company has presented over £39.5 million to The Salvation Army.
