Former Salvation Army Lifehouse resident takes to the stage

A tortured childhood, the deaths of close friends and a relationship breakdown led the 46-year-old to try and take his own life.

David survived but the experience inspired dramatic changes in his life. In April 2015 he sought help from The Salvation Army and a few months later he was asked to take part in the BBC One documentary Paul O’Grady: The Sally Army and Me. In an episode of the programme the iconic entertainer helped Londoner David prepare for his comedy night debut.

Now David is set for his Fringe debut after spending the last few months doing impromptu gigs around London. He'll be performing warm-up gigs at The Salvation Army’s Edinburgh City community church (aka Venue 405) on Thursday August 25 and Friday August 26.

He said: “I’m so grateful to The Salvation Army for giving me this opportunity to perform at the Fringe. I saw the festival had launched the other day and I started to get the wow factor.

“I’ve got a comedy mentor and he’s been getting me some last-minute open mic gigs so I’m feeling confident about performing at such an iconic festival.

“My show is all about people’s general life experiences and looking on the bright side of life.

“Some of my friends are coming up to see me perform and they’ve asked if I’m nervous. But I was in front of the TV cameras when I filmed with Paul O’Grady so I’m not worried.

“I’m so grateful to The Salvation Army for all the help they gave me when I stayed at Cambria House. And I’m thankful to Captain Jennifer Gosling at Edinburgh City Salvation Army for arranging and paying for my accommodation at the Fringe as well. It’s incredible.

“Hopefully I’ll be also able to take in a few other shows at the Fringe so I’m really looking forward to my time in Edinburgh.”

Other performers at venue 405 include Sarah Grace, Yorick Jackson, the NHS Choir and comedian David Standen, who appeared on the BBC One programme The Sally Army and Me.

Sarah’s show An Act Of Faith is based on the lessons she has learnt in life and her testimony so far, while Yorick is sharing John’s Gospel entirely from memory in his unique style.

The Salvation Army community church is also offering hospitality, with vintage afternoon teas being served in the conservatory area of the hall from tomorrow (August 23) to Saturday (August 27).

Tickets can be purchased at our Edinburgh City community church by calling 01316674313 or by messaging Captain Jennifer at https://www.facebook.com/salvationarmyedinburghcity/
