The Salvation Army in the Isle of Wight is offering free soup every Monday to help those facing financial difficulties.

Visitors can enjoy a bowl of home-made soup, a bread roll and tea or coffee at no cost between 10am and 2pm at the centre in Pyle Street, Newport.

Major Keith Wallis, of the Salvation Army, told the Isle of Wight County Press: "If the idea takes off, we would do whatever we can to help. We have a fantastic number of volunteers, many of whom helped at the Christmas event.

"The number of people who came to our Christmas lunch last month was more than double those who came in 2011."

Major Wallis added: "We are aware many people are finding economic difficulties at this time and this is an attempt to help a little."

So if you like a good bowl of warm hearty soup and you live in the Isle of Wight, don't forget to come along.
