Bring the hope of Easter into troubled lives

Jack is a single man who worked for many years in the building trade. But he had to give up work when he started to develop arthritis. He became heavily dependent on pain-killers, so much so that he became depressed and unable to cope. As he says now, ‘My life was a mess.’

Things gradually got worse. Jack was unable to manage his money, so he ran up debts. Then his flat was flooded from the flat above, ruining his furniture and bedding. He had to live in squalor because he couldn’t afford to replace them.

Jack would never have imagined that The Salvation Army could help him – but thankfully we were there for him. The local council referred him to us because he was in danger of being evicted.

In The Salvation Army Jack found the expert help he needed to get on top of his financial problems and more. His Salvation Army support worker Lindsay helped him recover benefits that he was entitled to, got him decent second-hand furniture, did the paperwork for an insurance claim and saw that he got medical help to reduce his dependence on drugs. 



Alongside this practical help, Lindsay and the Salvation Army team have been a true friend to Jack. He told us: ‘You always have the time to cheer me up when I’m lonely. You’re my light at the end of the tunnel.’



We will continue to give Jack practical and emotional support for as long as he needs it. Jack put his finger on a crucial point when he told us: ‘The Salvation Army saved my life.’ In so many cases our loving support is not just life-changing, but life-saving. We never want to be in a position where we have to turn away people who are desperate.
