Volunteers from The Salvation Army handed out more than 2,800 bottles of water to spectators of the London 2012 Women's Marathon on Sunday.
Despite torrential downpours in London, more than 30 hardy helpers manned our five water distribution stations at St Paul's Cathedral, the Mall, Mansion House and the Tower of London.
Our free water proved very popular with the estimated million people who lined the 26-mile course, where crowds were six people deep in some areas including the start and finish at the Mall.
The Salvation Army's highly visible emergency response vehicles were stationed at each water distribution hub, including at St Paul's, where the shadow minister for public heath, Labour MP Diane Abbott, whose Hackney North and Stoke Newington constituency is close to the Olympic Park in Stratford, gave away dozens of bottles of water to thirsty members of the public.She said: "The women's marathon on Sunday was inspirational. It was great to see such wonderful support from the public. I was pleased to support the Salvation Army, and I enjoyed providing refreshments for the crowd."
Diane Abbott was also joined by Mayor of Haringey Cllr David Browne - who helped give out bottles of water to members of the public.
At King's Cross St Pancras station, and the nearby St Pancras Church, thousands of bottles of water have been given out to ticketholders, volunteers and even competitors travelling to the Olympic Park.

On Friday 27 July, Salvation Army volunteers were joined by HG Bishop Angaelos from St Pancras Parish Church.Water distribution stations will also be on hand at the men's marathon on 12 August and at the Paralympic marathon on 9 September.
