Hadleigh Farm trainees learning how to bake cakes

Stars of Channel Four’s new series ‘The Fabulous Baker Brothers’, Tom and Henry Herbert, have chosen to donate some of the cooking equipment used in filming to The Salvation Army’s Hadleigh Training Centre and Farm in Essex.

Four ovens, two hobs and a fridge freezer, supplied by Appliances Online, are being used by trainees in this centre which provides 100’s of adults with special needs or difficult circumstances the support they need to get back into mainstream training or employment.

The ‘Fabulous Baker Brothers’ series currently broadcasts on Wednesdays at 8.30pm and takes viewers into the heart of the artisan kitchen to experience tips of baking classics often with a twist. When Tom and Henry finished filming, the company who supplied the equipment, the UK’s largest online kitchen appliance retailer Appliances Online, asked which charity they would like to donate the equipment to, the brothers from Gloucestershire replied that they were extremely fond of The Salvation Army.

Hadleigh Training Centre offers a diverse programme of training in job-related skills including catering and life-skills training for those who would benefit. Trainees who are referred to the Centre are unlikely to be able to cope with the structure of a mainstream training programme as they may lack the necessary practical skills and/or have difficulties in the area of social skills due to their disability. They may find it difficult to relate to those around them and may need to build up their confidence and self esteem before moving on to employment or further training.

Principal of The Salvation Army’s Hadleigh Training Centre, Bradley Craddock said: “Our trainees are already making excellent use of this generous donation in our kitchens where they are receiving training in all areas of working in a commercial kitchen.  I am certain there will be plenty of baking taking place over the coming months.”

This is a great start to what promises to be an exciting year for The Salvation Army in Essex as land at Hadleigh Farm which it has operated for over 100 years as a place to give vulnerable people new opportunities in life, is providing the host venue for the London 2012 Olympic Mountain Bike competition on 11th and 12th August 2012.
