Finding God

Children in worship

There is much written and discussed today on whether or not God exists. Some people claim that they would believe if only it could be proved that God exists. Others say that the existence of God can never be proved.

The Bible makes it quite clear that God will reveal himself to anyone who really wants to find him. 'You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart,' God says through the prophet Jeremiah 29:13. God sent his Son Jesus to make the way to God much clearer to us all. 'I am the way and the truth and the life,' Jesus said, 'no-one comes to the Father except through me' (John 14:7).

God is holy and pure and just

He has blessed us and done so much for us yet, as the Bible makes clear, 'We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way,' (Isaiah 53:6), and again it says that 'there is no-one righteous, not even one,' (Romans 3:10) 'all have sinned and fall short.' (verse 23). In other words none of us measure up to what God would have us be and created us to be.

How do I find God?

First you must accept that you are in need of forgiveness, that you are not pure and perfect.

  • Then humble yourself before God and admit the truth that he already knows, in other words confess all that you know to be sinful in your life.
  • We are told in the bible, 'God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life,' (John 3:16), so accept that when Jesus died on the cross he died for you, that the responsibility for your sin was laid on him as though he was the guilty one. Do it with a desire to live to please God and to sin no more and you will be saved. It will be the beginning of a real relationship with God.
  • Through the scriptures and prayer Jesus will show you how to live that life and he will send his Holy Spirit to enable you to do it. You will discover that Jesus is a real person and get to know him more and more each day as you live to please him. True Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship.
