Sport and our Church

The Salvation Army is excited about sport and doing Sport for Good!

Each week members of our churches and centres are participating in some form of activity all across the UK. There are so many good things about sport from the physical to the social benefits and as a Christian organisation we see also the spiritual development that comes from participating in sport.

Many of our churches (corps) have registered sports teams and Stowmarket SAFC is an officially accredited club with the FA. Others also have sports coaching for children and young people once a week and throughout the year, in partnership with the Childrens Ministry Unit, some corps host the In-Touch Sports week.

In and through sport the Salvation Army is serving those in difficult life situations by simply having fun or making welcome those who normally cannot join in. In many of our Lifehouses across the country, sport is enabling residents to learn life skills and regain confidence in building relationships while also growing in their relationship with Jesus.

Sports has also been an avenue for us to raise awareness of social justice issues related to our work or raise money for development projects. The Salvation Army Yeovil Bowls Club each year raise money for such International Development Projects and have also helped many of their community members through challenging times over the course of a season.

Placing value on God’s creation and his people, The Salvation Army Sport for Good promotes the use of its branded fairly traded footballs and rugby balls.

For more information on our work or to order your own fairly traded football or rugby ball email us at sportsministry@salvationarmy.org.uk. You can also sign up to our monthly newsletter to get all the latest news from the Sports Ministry team.
